When I had money
Lord, my friends all layin' around
When I had money
Lord, my friends all layin' around
But now an I spent all my money
All of my friends cannot be found

Now your friend don't know you
Boys, when you down an out
Your friend don't know you
Boys, when you down an out
If you ask them for a favor
They don't know what it's all about

Now they'll stop here to tell you
Boys, what your friend will do
Yes, they just stop here to tell you
Boys, what your friend will do
They'll help you spend all yo' money
And sing farewell to you.

'Play that thing, boy'

(harmonica)

Well, I'm goin' away to leave you
Oh yes, I'm goin' away
Yes, I'm goin' away to leave you
Oh yes, I'm goin' away
Because my friends have forsaken me
Boys, you know they threw me away.
